A word of warning as climate collapse barrels down upon us:
It's not about who causes the cataclysm. It's about who gets blamed. A quick perusal of the comments section of this article is certainly an eye-opener, and probably a stomach-turner as well.

And given Ft. McMurray's location at the heart of Alberta's tar-sands industry, many residents who are deeply reliant on the fossil fuel industry have had this handy excuse tucked away in their back pockets for some time.

We blame the fossil fuel industry for the coming cataclysm. The deniers blame us. It doesn't make sense. It's insane. It's downright evil. But it is what it is. They outnumber us. And they are well armed.
And you have been warned.

(21,088 posts)I don't blame individuals, the fossil fuel industry, or any other industry or institution for that matter, for the fire in Fort McMurray - or even for the coming rupture of civilization. I've worked hard over the past decade to figure out for myself the probable root causes of the multidimensional global clusterfuck. In the process, the concept of "blame" has faded from my worldview. IMO the causes go far deeper than anything for which individuals or industries could be held blameworthy.
But collective groups of people (aka "mobs" aren't persuaded by such impersonal perspectives, so there will be scapegoating and even murders of ecological activists in the years to come. North America may be less than a decade behind Honduras in this regard.
Please be careful out there.

(23,730 posts)disaster, 2. keep "ecoterrorism" as the issue when sane people are forced to deny it, and 3. subdue all those afraid of being caught being wrong for the first time, instead of realizing that the politics of public opinion is a contact sport and you have to attack right back at them
even the 2007 Crandall Canyon Mine disaster was blamed on hippie scientists
