3D printed turtle eggs to be used to detect poaching

3D printed turtle eggs to be used to detect poaching

By Kesavan Unnikrishnan 7 hours ago in Environment .

A conservation group has created 3D printed sea turtle eggs containing GPS trackers. The eggs are set to be deployed this fall in Central America during an arribada, or mass nesting event when 90 percent of eggs will be poached from certain beaches.

The 3D eggs created by Conservation group Paso Pacífico could easily pass for any of the millions of ping pong ball-size eggs laid and buried every year by endangered sea turtles on the beaches along the North and Central American coasts. The group plans to create a tracking map on the movement of eggs to help law enforcement officials and activists to crack down on the big players involved in poaching.
Kim Williams-Guillén, director of conservation science at Paso Pacífico says:

We want to sneak them into nests that are most vulnerable to poaching. It would be really easy for them to grab one of those eggs and not even notice it. We’re not planning on collecting data in real time, unless that’s something that they express real interest in. It’s certainly a possibility. Being able to determine the players with money who are really driving the trade and removing even a couple of them could have a huge effect.

Sea turtle eggs are considered a delicacy and aphrodisiac in various cultures. Millions of sea turtle eggs are stolen each year with each one costing anywhere from $5 to $20 apiece causing severe threat to the endangered species.

Are all going to be poor, trying to live on a subsistence income.

I agree that the ideal is to track down and eliminate the top of the heap
but we - and, more importantly, the turtles - can't wait for the ideal solution.

For every desperate person caught there is 2 to take their place. But yea, lets punish the downtrodden, we do it here in the US and it has cured most of our problems, and the "few" problems we have left...t-rump is going to cure them.

I don't buy the "It's alright to be a selfish criminal if you can describe yourself as 'poor'" excuse.

It doesn't work for crimes against other humans and it doesn't work for crimes against nature.

There are poor people out there defending the turtles and better-off pieces of shit destroying them.

It sounds like they plan to track the eggs to their final destination and find the people who are PAYING the collectors. I hope this works in the long run!

But it seems some law and order people here on DU would rather punish the hungry and poor. I don't understand why someone without compassion would be on here, took a wrong turn maybe? Went right instead of left??
