Farms, More Productive Than Ever, Are Poisoning Drinking Water in Rural America

I moved this from LBN, as it has been judged to be analysis. I can handle that.

"The worst-kept secret." Rural Americans are grappling with polluted well water, the by-product of intensive farming.

U.S. farms, more productive than ever, are poisoning drinking water for rural Americans.

One in seven Americans drink from private wells, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Nitrate concentrations rose significantly in 21% of regions where USGS researchers tested groundwater from 2002 through 2012, compared with the 13 prior years. The greatest increases were in agricultural areas. More recent sampling shows the pattern is continuing, at a potentially greater rate.

Meanwhile, more than 16% of groundwater from wells sampled between 2002 and 2012 topped the federal nitrate limit of 10 parts per million, versus 12% in the 1990s. The percentage above the limit fell slightly in the wells sampled after 2013 but remained elevated.

"The worst-kept secret is how vulnerable private wells are to agricultural runoff," says David Cwiertny, director of the University of Iowa's Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination.

It's discussing nitrate pollution, which is caused by fertilizers, even excess animal manure. Round Up is not a fertilizer, and doesn't even contain nitrates.

If you banned Round Up tomorrow, the nitrate pollution would be unfazed.

Just a general comment. Where Im at round up is a pesticide thats applied routinely along w the fertilizers above. And bc it doesnt break down, it sinks into the water table too and runs off in rivers and streams and gets in water supplies that we all drink. My comment was in relation to the OP. Its not like I made a comment about Porpoises. I'll delete it if it bothers you though bc it's not meant to throw you off. You may want to block me though bc sometimes I generally comment, and I'm not a perfect person, but, I try to approximate that though. I dont mean to offend you, in the future.
See my signature line. Have a good weekend.
