EPA: Carbon dioxide from power plants rose last year
BY TIMOTHY CAMA - 02/20/19 02:55 PM EST
Carbon dioxide emissions from power plants rose slightly last year while overall electricity production grew by a larger factor, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said Wednesday.
As part of its required annual reporting of emissions, the EPA said carbon dioxide output grew 0.6 percent in 2018 over the previous year, to 1.93 billion tons, while electricity generated grew 5 percent, to 23.4 quadrillion British thermal units.
At the same time, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide emissions from the power sector fell, the EPA said, by 4 percent and 6 percent respectively.
The EPA celebrated the decreases.
These data show that America is enjoying ever cleaner air as our economy grows, and the U.S. continues as a global leader in clean air progress, Bill Wehrum, the EPAs associate administrator for air, said in a statement.

(5,954 posts)All those always-on devices, replacing 1 cfl with nine leds, general wastage, lighting up our cities to sports stadium levels, etc etc etc.
We really need to cool it on all fronts.

(9,897 posts)The rise in CO2 levels is global and we are the single largest emitter. That means unless we DRAMATICALLY cut our emissions, not slow them down or level them off but CUT THEM HUGELY, then the global situation is going to remain on its glide path, which is hell on Earth in less than 2 decades.
Natural Gas replacing coal is not a carbon dioxide or greenhouse gas reduction, its a parallel move at best. It is time for everyone to stop lying.
Government studies do NOT show a strong likelihood of society surviving a 3 degree Celsius rise in temperatures. The situation is NOT 'worrisome', it is goddamn biblical armageddon bad. We are not "improving air quality" while dumping MORE warming gas into the air than the amount that is already there and already baking the planet like an easy-bake oven.
We are not going to do anything about it because most of the people alive right now will die before the real calamities start to befall us - the crop failures, the topsoil erosions, the coastal flooding and refugee crises, the resource wars and genocides. We currently do not care about the future more than we care about today and because of that lack of species level empathy or foresight.
To the future generations, I am sorry. It is hollow and inadequate, but its all I have for you. The thoughts and prayers were from the other guys...
