There are real concerns entire species of plants and animals have been wiped out by bushfires following revelations almost 500 million animals have died since the crisis began.
Ecologists from the University of Sydney now estimate 480 million mammals, birds and reptiles have been lost since September.
That figure is likely to soar following the devastating fires which have ripped through Victoria and the NSW South Coast over the past couple of days, leaving several people dead or unaccounted for, razing scores of homes and leaving thousands stranded, news.com.au reports.
This morning more than 130 fires were raging across NSW and Victoria, with millions of hectares of national park already burnt.
Harrowing scenes of kangaroos fleeing walls of fire, charred bodies of koalas and cockatoos falling dead out of trees have horrified the world as it tries to take in the scale of the unfolding disaster.

(4,619 posts)Just a matter of time.
And we ignore the obvious.
I am so sorry.
My "home area" burns almost every year. The fires get bigger and bigger. Methow Valley. Twisp / Pateros.
Carlton Complex Fire.
My town incinerated.
I live Australia's condition every summer.
Welcome to reality.
Fire.

(36,163 posts)because it's so beautiful, I dread seeing the devastation. You are so right about us ignoring the obvious. Silly humans, we are more fragile than we know.
I've never seen my Newcastle family so sad and worried.
My daughter-in-law weeps for the country.
Please stay safe.

(25,917 posts)Fire is the thing that terrifies me the most. I have read a number of books about fire, the Station Nightclub Fire, the Circus Fire, the Peshtigo Fire, and several others. Earlier today I watched a report on Australian TV about the fires there, and people evacuating, and all I can think of is, What would I do? How would I cope? Where would I go?
And that's just the personal level, completely aside from the horrific deaths of the animals. It feels as if all of Australia is burning, even worse than the recent California fires.

(4,986 posts)To do better as an individual. A little less meat (while being mindful of the protein that plant sources provide) and putting out a dish of fresh water everyday for the critters and birds is the least I can do.

(102,448 posts)Most of all, I am angry. How could our leaders turn a blind eye to this--no matter how horrible they are?

(740 posts)need to be removed and replaced with sane ones who understand the problem and will move heaven and earth to solve it. It is up us ( and the people in other nations) to do it. Time to wake up while we still have at least a chance to stop it from getting even worse.
