Denmark got 50% of power from wind and solar in 2019

Denmark got half its power from wind and solar last year in what its grid operator hailed as an important milestone in its hugely ambitious energy transition push.

Wind accounted for more than 47% of Danish electricity in 2019, with solar taking green power to the 50% mark, said Energinet.

The wind share beats a previous 43% record set in 2017, and comes as Denmark pursues an emissions reductions goal of 70% by 2030 that was enshrined in law late last year.

Denmark – historically a leader in the global wind sector – has recently announced major initiatives in offshore wind and green hydrogen production as it attempts to hit that goal, and push its energy transition into harder-to-decarbonise areas like heating and transport.

The "low hanging fruit" has been handled in many cases. Further transformations will be more expensive and not so cost effective in the short run.

But it's still a glass of piss.

So far all the wind and solar industry has accomplished is to ensure we will burning natural gas for many years to come.

This kind of "good news" is going to be the death of us.

The only way to quit fossil fuels is to quit fossil fuels. It's like smoking. Going from a two pack a day habit to a one pack a day habit isn't going to save anyone.

An economy powered entirely by "renewable" energy would look nothing like the fossil fueled economy many affluent people now enjoy.

We already have multiple solutions to these problems, we just don't like them.

So let's build more wind turbines and pretend everything is going to be okay.
