Eight communities totaling 6,800 people have already evacuated, Northwest Territories' region's fire information officer Mike Westwick said earlier Wednesday.
Are Canadian Wildfires Common?
As of that day, there were 1,067 active wildfires burning across Canada. Over 200 wildfires have already burned throughout the Northwest Territories. These fires are typical during Canadian summers.
That's because summer warmth, drier air and occasionally windy conditions can combine with thunderstorms (lightning) to bring the mix of weather you need for wildfire starts and spread, said weather.com senior meteorologist Jonathan Erdman.
2023 is an exceptional year for Canadian wildfires, not because of the number of individual fires burning throughout the country, but because of the vast area blazes have covered. So far, over 13 million acres have been burned through, by far the most in the past 40 years.

(3,425 posts)The first week wasn't bad because we had lots of rain in the Yukon and northern BC, but we're approaching Kamloops and the smoke, haze & smell of burning wood is bad.
They desperately need rain, no amount of men or technology (or prayer) is going put these fires out.
I feel for our Canadian friends.
