Anchorage closes in on low snowfall record

http://www.adn.com/article/20150401/single-day-measurable-snowfall-march-anchorage-closes-low-snowfall-record

This winter has been the least snowiest on record in Anchorage up to this point -- nearly 50 inches below average -- and is on pace to be the least snowiest ever recorded in Anchorage.

In a climate summary, the National Weather Service wrote that only 20.7 inches of snow has fallen in the Anchorage area through the end of March. Since records began in 1952, Alaska's largest city has usually averaged 70.3 inches of snow by March's end.

Anchorage saw low snowfall amounts throughout most of the season, and March added almost nothing to the season's total; throughout the entire month, the city registered just 0.2 inches of snow -- all of which fell on March 3, the only day of the month with measurable snowfall. That 0.2 figure is also the second-lowest snowfall total ever record for March; in 1983, the city recorded just a trace.

The 2014-2015 snow season, which runs from July 1 to June 30, is on pace to be Anchorage's least snowy season of all time. The current record low season came more than 50 years ago, in the snow season of 1957-1958, when only 30.4 inches fell. That year, 29.4 inches had fallen by the end of March.
