If Congress kills Iran deal, sanctions would lose India’s support

“For the United States, because of a congressional action, to isolate our country on such an important issue, would be devastating to our standing in the world”, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on Friday.

Republicans disputed that Iran would be let off the hook if Congress kills the deal, arguing USA sanctions are the ones that had the most devastating effect on its economy.

“Well, I guess if you look at the population of the countries that are represented in this particular agreement, the vast majority-the 99 percent of the world, is on the side of the United States and global partners in implementing this agreement”, Earnest said.

“Iran will get all the benefits of this deal without having to give up anything”, Earnest said. And, he argued, the United Nations “acting promptly” to take it up only makes sense because the agreement is not just between the US and Iran but those countries who also negotiated the deal, including all the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

Either the deal goes through, or we take another step towards being a partner country rather than the bully/leader of the world.

The sanctions were over, have been over since Spring, it's just a matter of time and whether we eschew the chance to participate as equals and pout. Kerry did yeoman work getting it done, keeping us in the game, getting the best deal he could. From what I know of the issues, he did well.

Iran needs it too. The teeth-knashers on their side will lose the argument there too.
