Syrian rebels capture Islamic State headquarters in Manbij: U.S. military

U.S.-backed rebels fighting Islamic State militants in Syria captured a headquarters operation as they pushed into the western part of the town of Manbij over the weekend, the U.S. military said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Islamic State headquarters, which was located in a hospital, was being used as a command center and logistics hub. The U.S.-backed Syrian rebels also took control of part of the town, enabling civilians in the area to flee the fighting, the statement said.

The Syrian rebels were continuing to battle Islamic State on four fronts for control of Manbij, clearing territory as they pushed toward the center of the city, the statement said.

Islamic State militants have staged counterattacks, but the Syrian rebels have maintained momentum with the help of air strikes by the U.S.-led coalition, the statement said. It said the coalition has carried out more than 450 air strikes around Manbij since the operation to take the town began.

They need ammo and weapons, but those are easy to come by.

They need fighters, which is getting tricky now that there is fighting at the turkish border itself.

They need money to pay their fighters, and they have switched to printing their own money to get around that.

They need gas. How desperately do they need gas? ISIS has started building refineries from scratch in safe territories.

They need cars. ISIS mods cars into Mad-Max-style combat-vehicles, but there are only so many cars and only so many spare-parts in Syria and Iraq.

I think, they dropped this illusion of "come to the Islamic State and build a better tomorrow". They tried to lure in engineers and doctors. But I think by now they are more interested in anybody who can use a rifle.

They hold it a while, exploit the resources there, and move on when it gets too hot. They thrive in the political vacuum left by failed states: Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, and others.

But yeah, it is getting too hot in Syria.
