A mother and her two daughters have turned themselves in to police over a blaze that killed dozens of animals at a zoo in Germany on New Years Eve, police confirmed on Thursday.
The three women are being investigated for setting off flying lanterns, which are banned, to celebrate the New Year, Gerd Hoppmann, head of the Krefeld criminal police, said at a press conference.
The 60-year-old mother and her two adult daughters handed themselves in to police on Wednesday after hearing about the fire on local radio, Hoppmann said.
He said they seemed like sensible and responsible people who had shown courage in coming forward. Local prosecutors are now investigating the women for negligent arson, a crime that can be punished by up to five years in prison.

(11,686 posts)Because of brainless stupidity many animals lost their lives in one of the more horrific deaths a living creature can experience.
I cried when I read that....in fact I am tearing up now.
I hope those women feel painfully deep remorse for the rest of their lives.

(3,299 posts)The lantern fell on a petroleum tank farm. A fire started on the grass near a gasoline storage tank which burned out of control for many hours. Fireman risked their lives to contain the fire. A worker at a nearby site maybe a kilometer away found the lantern which had been used the night before and landed, and reignited it. He was arrested for negligent arson. Don't know what happened to him.
