Cars vandalized in Jewish-Arab village: 'Regards from Ulpana'

'Death to Arabs' and 'revenge' spray-painted on vehicles in Neve Shalom on heels of Knesset decision to evacuate homes in West Bank settlement

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4239885,00.html

<snip>

"Unknown vandals punctured the tires of 14 parked cars in Neve Shalom Friday morning. The words "revenge," "death to Arabs" and "regards from Ulpana" were spray-pained on the vehicles.

Neve Shalom is a cooperative village that was jointly founded in 1969 by Israeli Jews and Arabs to promote coexistence. It is located about seven kilometers (4.3 miles) north of Beit Shemesh.

The vandals also spray-painted the words "regards from Havat Gilad" and "revenge" on the wall of a local elementary school. Havat Gilad is a Jewish outpost in the West Bank."

One car in the Shuafat neighborhood sprayed with the word 'Ulpana,' the part of the Beit El settlement where the High Court has ordered homes demolished.

<snip>

"Vandals slashed the tires of seven cars in the Arab neighborhood Shuafat in East Jerusalem early yesterday - one car was sprayed with the word "Ulpana," the part of the Beit El settlement where the High Court has ordered homes demolished.

"We got up in the morning and that's what we saw," said Ibrahim Salah, a resident of Shuafat. "The people here are simple folk who want to live in peace. I don't understand why people are doing this. This country is becoming racist .... Now foreign laborers are being targeted as well. Racism is rife in Jerusalem because of radical Jewish groups."

Late Thursday night, vandals slashed the tires of 14 cars and sprayed racist slogans on three of them at the Jewish-Arab village Neveh Shalom near Latrun. Graffiti was also scrawled on the entrance to the community's bilingual Arab-Jewish school."

<snip>

"In recent months hate graffiti has been sprayed several times on the walls of the bilingual school near Jerusalem's Beit Safafa neighborhood. The slogans have included "Death to Arabs" and "Kahane was right," referring to the far-right American-Israeli rabbi who was assassinated in 1990.

The school is a symbol of coexistence in the capital, with an equal number of Jewish and Arab students."

Neve Shalom is an inspiring project, and this right-wing attack on it is an attack on the principle of coexistence.

For anyone who is interested in the village and associated organization:

they should approve of

Israel to house Ulpana evictees in unauthorized outpost buildings

Deputy AG cites 'urgent military requirements' to waive the need for any building permit for the mobile homes to which the occupants of the West Bank homes are slated to move.

they're simply being moved from one illegal outpost to another

Booklet distributed in Beit El settlement instructs right-wingers to block roads, infiltrate IDF bases and commit 'price tag' acts to prevent imminent evacuation of five homes, turn area into 'one of most turbulent in West Bank

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4243686,00.html

<snip>

"Committing 'price tag' acts, infiltrating IDF bases, blocking roads and protesting outside the homes of senior security establishment officials – this how extreme rightists plan to thwart the evacuation of homes in the Ulpana neighborhood, according to a brochure titled "The practical plan to save the outposts and hills in the Land of Israel."

The booklet has been distributed in Beit El over the past couple of days as part of the extreme right efforts to prevent the evacuation of five homes in the West Bank settlement.

In line with a court ruling, the State is expected to raze the Ulpana neighborhood homes by July 1 because they were built on private Palestinian land."

Suspected 'price tag' act in village of Jaba: 'War has begun' and 'Pay the price' spray-painted on mosque two weeks before scheduled evacuation of Beit El's Ulpana neighborhood. Netanyahu, Barak condemn 'irresponsible' act

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4244269,00.html

<snip>

"Unknown assailants torched and spray-painted Hebrew slogans on a mosque in the village of Jaba, southeast of Ramallah. Damage was caused to the building.

The slogans read, "Ulpana war" "The war has started" and "Pay the price." IDF and police forces are canvassing the area. It is suspected the vandalism was a "price tag" act."

<snip>

"Council head Abdul Karim Shraf said that the arson was first discovered at around 1:30 am. "Three-hundred people went over to help. We then found out that graffiti was sprayed on the walls, racist slurs. We weren't surprised, this is what the settlers do – torch and desecrate houses of worship."

<snip>

"Palestinian Religious Endowments Minister Mahmoud al-Habash arrived at the village to assess the damage and said that PA will restore the mosque. "The only solution is that the settlers leave our land," he said. "We started putting cameras in mosques and establishing popular committees to protect them."

Al-Habash accused Israeli politicians and religious leader of encouraging these types of occurrences. "Israeli religious leaders incite and give the green light for these actions against the Palestinian people but we shall hold on to our land and restore all that has been destroyed. Even if you burn a mosque or 1,000 trees every day, we shall rebuild and replant them."

<snip>

"The United States Tuesday condemned an arson attack by suspected settlers on a West Bank mosque as "hateful," and urged Israel to prosecute swiftly those behind it.

"The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms today's provocative attack on a mosque in the West Bank village of Kfar Jaba near Ramallah, " State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

"Hateful, dangerous, and provocative actions such as these are never justified," she added in a statement."
