Israeli ultra-Orthodox, in rare show of unity, say they won’t be drafted

<snip>

"Ultra-Orthodox parties inside Israel’s government say they will oppose any new law that would apply Israel’s compulsory military draft to ultra-Orthodox men — a stance that bodes ill for the stability of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition.

Last week, Israel’s Supreme Court overturned a law that has helped tens of thousands of religious men avoid military service and pursue state-sponsored religious studies instead. The privilege has created widespread resentment among Israel’s secular majority and encouraged ultra-Orthodox men to become lifelong students, reducing their large families to living off state handouts.

With a July deadline looming, Netanyahu is now racing to find a new formula acceptable to the court and his coalition.

Netanyahu has promised to replace the so-called Tal Law with legislation that would allow “a much more equal sharing of the burden.” If no new law is on the books by the time the old one expires on July 31, universal conscription will presumably go into effect.

Depending on both ultra-Orthodox and fiercely secular parties in his government, Netanyahu faces a difficult task drawing up a new system."

What argument do these Ultra-Orthodox Israeli Jews put forward that they should be exempt from military service?
Why shouldn't they serve?

I have long understood that it is a right of passage for young Israelis to serve in the IDF. But I have never heard the reasoning that surrounds the fact that Ultra-Orthodox are, rather 'were', given an exemption.

I do remember some time ago seeing a news article that observed a very small number of Ultra-Orthodox who volunteered with the IDF.
From what I remember it was a major pain-in-the-ass for the IDF, given that certain ultra-orthodox observances regarding food, housing, mixed contact with other soldiers, etc... still had to be observed in order for these men to serve. That was the last I had heard of it. I am unsure if the IDF continued with recruiting them given the difficulties in accommodating them.

I have also read about the friction between the ultra-orthodox and the secular in Israel. From this article, it seems to indicate that friction is heating things up.

4. the history....

"in the beginning"...1948. The ultra orthodox didn't (still don't) want to mix with the secular as it will endanger their youth being exposed to the other options in life, so a political deal was made. I believe there was about 400 or so that were exempted. That number has since grown into the tens of thousands, but the political clout of the ultra orthodox remains.

public pressure has been constant about the "unfairness of it all" and an experiment was done....a single unit was made to take the orthodox misfits, that anyway didn't fit in to their life style and get them out....via the IDF.

As soldiers most are pretty pathetic, but there are others, who aren't and who use it as a way into the secular world (I've served with two of them.....) are hard working, and dedicated. This one unit is pretty much separated from the rest of the army and they get to have their own little rules, and pretty much kept out of harms way.

They do serve as an outlet for the ultra orthodox energetic youth who can't sit and study torah all day long....

but nobody really wants them in the army......but they can do national service

Thanks for the history. I had never known the circumstances surrounding the orthodox exemption.
Very interesting. Still grossly unfair, but interesting.
