I went to the big city (Boise) for my first ever Gay Pride Celebration with a truck full of fellow rural Lesbians.
....But I kinda missed it.
I think I spent PrideFest in the closet.
While the Rally was happening, my cowgirl comrades were, sitting in the back corner of a gay bar, chatting, drinking, and....just sort of biding time. I drank coffee, and looked at my watch.
While the parade was going on, my buds found another gay bar. It was quiet because all the gays that ever there was werent gathered there together because , today was the day that the gays were all strutting it in a parade!
Dammit! I LOVE parades!
By the time the parade and rally were over, my fellows emerged from their cover, and ventured warily into daylight, and finally made their way to Pride Festival, where there were booths and festivities and music in the park. Glitter and tu tus, and drag kings, and lots of people with friendly dogs.
My friends glanced furtively about and moved away each time someone with professional looking cameras was near.
The Media. They were avoiding the media. All day long. Hiding.
I was horrified to realize these veteran lesbians are , can it be? In the fucking CLOSET!??
Jesus Christ! In 2012! At Pride Fest??!!
(Next year I'm not traveling with the in crowd, I want to run with the OUT crowd.

(5,105 posts)The closet, if one lives in it long enough, damages people. I do understand, but on the one day of the year, in a 'big city' where no one is likely to be clocked...
Sad that some of us have to live like this, even now.

(20,599 posts)They may have had a very real reason to be shy of the cameras. Sadly, in 2012, you can still be fired in most places over which gender you take to bed.
I don't think that's called 'being closeted'. It could have been simple self-preservation.
