"This isn't something you kid about, Brittany," her mom scolded, snatching the kitchen cordless and taking it down the hall to call the Johnsons. A minute later she returned, her face a mask of shock and terror. "Honey, I'm so sorry. We're too late," she said tonelessly as Brittany's knees buckled; 13-year-old Sam had climbed into the bathtub after school and shot herself in the mouth with her own hunting rifle. No one at school had seen her suicide coming.

(22,845 posts)I was bullied badly in school back in the 1960s, but I can't even imagine how much more shit I'd have had to endure if I'd been gay. And the bullying that goes on today is exponentially worse than what happened in the 60s, as far as I know.
What hell these poor kids go through.
What ignorant savage shits the christofascists are. I'd love to make them experience some serious bullying.

(36,693 posts)I have spent my whole life in Minnesota. I grew up just south of Anoka.
I do not remember it being so hateful while I grew up.
I do not remember being so angry after reading an article.
My first thought is to destroy all the people in that school district that let this happen.
So many adults usings hate to control others, others being afraid.
Others in power not doiing anything because they did not know what to do.
So much hate because they find it so easy to do.

(5,924 posts)Anoka High School student Justin Aaberg killed himself after being relentlessly bullied.
The excuses made by the district officials and evangelical leaders are nauseating.
"Anti-gay backlash was instant. Minnesota Family Council president Tom Prichard blogged that Justin's suicide could only be blamed upon one thing: his gayness. 'Youth who embrace homosexuality are at greater risk [of suicide], because they've embraced an unhealthy sexual identity and lifestyle,' Prichard wrote."
If this were the case, Minneapolis public schools, just 20 miles to the south, would see a much higher rate of suicide than Anoka-Hennepin. In Minneapolis, GLBT students can count on protection from their peers and adults.
One thing is true: hateful bigotry is a lifestyle choice. I hope the bigots in Anoka-Hennepin are devastated by the Southern Poverty Law Center lawsuit and the Justice Department investigation.
It's definitely worth reading all the way through.

(895 posts)that bigots are allowed to spread push their bigotry into schools. Just because your religion tells you to force its on other people and have it spread, doesn't mean you get to step on other people's religious liberty. I don't see how schools aren't sued on that fact. If they can't legislate their religious bigotry, it makes it that much harder for them to hurt these kids.
It's just straight up child abuse to go around telling kids that they're going to be tortured for eternity for being who they are. It's got to stop.
