Several Skutt High alumni have posted a petition on the website change.org asking the Catholic school to end what they see as discriminatory employment practices against gays.
According to the petition, Matthew Eledge, an English teacher and a speech coach at the school, was told his teaching contract would not be renewed next year after he informed administrators of his decision to get engaged to his partner, a man.
Kacie Hughes, a 2012 Skutt graduate whos now a junior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, posted the petition Tuesday. By the end of the business day, it had garnered more than 10,000 signatures and was being circulated through social media.
Hughes, an assistant speech coach at Skutt, said Eledge OKd the posting. The two are friends outside of school. Eledge, who was returning from a trip Tuesday to a national collegiate speech tournament in support of other former students, could not be reached immediately for comment.
