Related: About this forumOne homophobic and one transphobic alert, both allowed to stand, thanks to the wonder that is DU now
both, would have been removed by moderators, who were not perfect but were MUCH better on minority issues
1. Honestly why don't you give some thought to these limp wristed comebacks.
several du members, said there was nothing homophobic about it, although if you put it in google, here is one of the first things that comes up
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=limp%20wristed
apparently juror took the time to look up the posters history but not the history of the actual words.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: "Limp-wristed" also means ineffectual. There's no indication, in this post or this DUer's history, that it was meant as a slur.
2. This comment in reponse to Caitlyn Jenner 'Got a dong? Then you're a dude! Sorry if I'm being old-fashioned'
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Post is inappropriate but not really an attack but an opinion, a very wrong one but people are allowed to have that. Skirts the line though. It would be better to leave it and converse with the poster as to why it is wrong, no ill intent seemed so maybe some headway as to why it was wrong could be made rather that just censoring it. Hopefully.
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: no, he is being old fashioned, and pro-science

(1,596 posts)I don't expect to be arguing with angry homophobes when I come to DU.
I really hope the admins do something to fix the jury problems soon.

(111,480 posts)"Limp wristed" did mean useless, ineffectual many years ago when I was growing up. Yeah, I'm old, and it's taken 50 years for that phrase to morph into what it is to younger people today.
In the second case, the poster really did need to be answered in the thread as to the reasons many M-F trans people aren't having hideously expensive surgery with a prolonged recovery period. Face it, allowing people to transition instead of stuffing them into a closet and letting them suffer is also a new thing. Some old folks just haven't kept up.
When someone posts something you don't like, answer it. Try to remember we're all on the same side here and that it's better to inform people than it is to censor them. Hiding posts should be reserved for hard fighting words, obvious ad homs, and trying to rally support for Republicans.

(111,480 posts)and we're on the same side, so cut them some slack and inform them rather than trying to get them kicked off DU by hiding posts.

The jury system is broken and useless. It's more of a popularity contest for popular opinion, and right now, popular opinion is skewing to the right.
I don't know what happened to this place, but the admin needs to enforce its rules and get these infiltrators out so we can go back to being a place of liberal and progressive community members, not center/center-right.
If I wanted that, I'd go to Discussionist or some worthless right wing turd site.

(6,419 posts)Sometimes there are hides for no good reason, sometimes things stand that shouldn't. There is no prevailing rule. DU is not suddenly transphobic or homophobic just because of this. I would say the prevailing wind is still the other way and won't change. There were plenty of hides on one of those threads that you mention.
On the other hand, if they really cared about LGBT rights, DU would put a moratorium on fake news from government propaganda channels of homophobic regimes like Iran & Russia (PressTV & RT), but no one agrees with me on that one.

(6,947 posts)It's always better to forgive. Post a reply. Problem solved.
If the poster is a disruptive person he/she will likely show up again and get scrutiny. Everyone in the DU community supports LGBT respect.
But in the reality of cause-and-effect, enforcing language that respects LGBT people does cause LGBT respect, but a society that respects LGBT citizens is described in language that reflects that reality of LGBT respect.
And isn't the goal enlightened people, not just an artificial, enlightened language?

(3,192 posts)We will always have to deal with this kind of shit. Some know no better, some do it deliberately. Some learned and never questioned.
Even as PC as we want everyone to be, and as sensitized as we are to issues like this, I still find myself unable to recognize some of the dog whistles that are sent up until they are pointed out to me. I'd have missed the first one.

(6,036 posts)For a couple days this place will full of crap blaming us. The level of support has always been so/so in here. IMO better to engage people as to why and how such language is offensive. Look at what it took to stop the Coulter comments back in the day.
