Flu season blamed for packed emergency rooms, ambulance backlogs in California

Flu season is hitting California so hard that people are packing emergency rooms, flu medications are running out, and the death toll is rising, the Los Angeles Times reported. In some areas, flu-related emergency calls are causing ambulance backlogs.

Late December marked the start of a sharp increase in flu activity in the state, and it shows no signs of letting up. According to California health officials, 27 people under age 65 have died from the flu since October, the Times reported. Last year, the state reported three flu-related deaths from October through early January.

What areas are impacted?

All areas of California are being hit hard by the flu, according to the report.

In Southern California, an emergency room at the UCLA Medical Center treated about 200 patients in one day. Most of them were seeking relief from flu symptoms. Normally, about 140 patients are seen in a day, according to the report.

Her contractor Was supposed to start the job on Monday but postponed it until next Wednesday because a lot of his crew has the flu. This is Northern California. And both my husband, son and myself have a cough/cold that we can’t get rid of. The fires in Santa Rosa sent a lot of toxic stuff into the air. Top that with flu....we’re in for a difficult winter.

A friend had the flu over the holidays and was told to stay in and quarantined for 7 days. She said all she felt like doing that whole time was sleep.

Usually associate flu with nausea and vomiting and fever, but it was all severe upper respiratory, horrible coughing spells, then very sore stomach/ribs from that.
I can understand why it could be serious danger to some people, it was hell on the lungs and chest.

The only thing that actually helped was a cough-congestion OTC med, that lasted about 5 hours. The minute it wore off, I would wake from a sound sleep with horrible coughing again.
took over 10 days to get rid of most of the coughing spells.

comes in lil red fluid capsules. supposed to last 6-8 hours, worked very well. Also needed some cough drops, the menthol type, to sooth the throat around the time I needed to take another dose of the pills, since even breathing in caused cough spasms.
I finally figured out I needed to buy 2 packages of the pills at a time, we both went thru the first pack pretty fast, and did not feel like going shopping again, but had to.
Now they are in the medicine cabinet, just in case.

Day Quill was not strong enough.
Congestion was really horrid, but the Robitussin worked, strong formula.
If that does not work, I would suggest seeing a doc to get the really strong codeine based syrup.
