How big a turkey to feed four of us? All women, but two of us can eat some turkey! Plus leftovers are imperative.

(2,674 posts)Years ago when my kids were young, I'd buy a tom turkey, Don't think they even sell them anymore. They are about twice the size of the ones now sold in the stores and much cheaper than a turkey hen. I'd bake the turkey and make lots of cornbread dressing. I'd save all the good broth and juices from the turkey. After we'd had the big Thanksgiving meal, I'd take all the meat off the turkey bones and put cornbread dressing and turkey in freezer containers, enough to feed 5. I'd spoon some of the turkey broth over it all to keep it moist and put the containers in the freezer for future meals. Usually get 4 or 5 meals off the turkey, plus the day after snacking on the turkey. What a treat for the kids to have turkey and dressing on a dreary January day.

(9,303 posts)For 6 adults, 1 teenager and 2 little ones. Will be plenty. We mostly like the white meat and give the leftover dark meat (careful to remove any bones and tendons) to the family pets. Leftover white meat is wonderful of course.
Our turkey was free with Giant points.

(1,958 posts)the white meat from both turkey and chicken. Our family prefers the more flavorful dark meat, the thighs.
I find the white meat of both chicken and turkey to be somewhat bland.
