...bought have been quite flavorless, so I gave up. Are they supposed to be so bland, and, if not, how do you pick a good one?

I've never had star fruit before but, after reading this thread, my mind is mulling.

Maybe a plate of sliced star fruit with a bowl of pomegranate seeds in the middle? You could probably sprinkle the pomegranate seeds over other dishes besides the star fruit.

I'd do both as accents to a larger salad or other dish, though. When I've had starfruit in restaurants they've mostly seemed to be for pretty and, of course, tropical ambiance, because of their bland flavor.

Wonder what they'd taste like picked ripe off a tree in the back yard?

Think I'll make a quick run to the store before it gets nuts.

Thought I was done with my shopping.

Safeway.
Whole Foods.
Sprouts.

Nada.

Ah well. I picked up a pomegranate and a kiwi.

Not sure I'll try to make a dish of it.

But nice to snack on while I'm cooking!

A Genius Kitchen recipe got two 5-stars. I was actually looking for a picture of how pretty kiwi is sliced, and turns out there are a lot of kiwi-pomegranate recipes out there. Not that strange, I guess. Pomegranates are also warm-climate fruits.

The closest reliable source from our rural Georgia town is a pan-Asianmarket about 45 minutes away, but I know that going in, and when cooking is fun or passion cannot be denied... Another time.

I'll put this on my list of possibles for Christmas dinner. And, yes. It is a passion driven mission.

Our Ethical Culture Society produced a "Hunger Awareness 'Banquet'" where participants are divided into the First, Second, and Third Worlds. (The proceeds this year go to Puerto Rico.) The children are included.

I used the star fruit in a tropical fruit salad (pineapple, Mandarin oranges, red mangoes, red seedless grapes, kiwis, and more) for the table of the people who we'd call the 1%. The Third World got stale crackers and dirty water.

We raised nearly $1,000 and our kids will be in contact with a school in PR now.

As far as the star fruit went, it was a welcome blend in our fruit mélange.

Thanks for all your help.
