Pizza for breakfast is an American classic. Whether it's cold and taken straight from the box or served after an early morning reheat, it's basically a delicacy all on its own. However, I've never characterized the tradition in any way, shape, or form as healthy. In fact, I'm pretty sure I haven't ever heard 'pizza' and 'healthy' in the same sentence...until now. According to New York-based nutritionist Chelsey Amer, a cheesy, greasy, carb-filled slice is better for you than your favorite breakfast cereal. So, I guess it's time for us all to rethink our a.m. eating habitsand to celebrate.
Amer credits the high sugar content in most cereals for its poor reputation, while The Daily Meal adds the lack of protein and healthy fats are contributing to its "nutritionally bleak" standing. "You may be surprised to find out that an average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk contain nearly the same amount of calories," Amer told the site. "However, pizza packs a much larger protein punch, which will keep you full and boost satiety throughout the morning."
While it still might be a little far-fetched to call your early morning pizza indulgence a healthy option, it's definitely healthier. That counts for something, right!? Amer does credit its protein content and admits, "a slice of pizza contains more fat and much less sugar than most cold cereals, so you will not experience a quick sugar crash."

(22,985 posts)It is true that kids prefer sweetened cereals, but the origin of American breakfast cereals was actually a movement towards healthier whole-grain foods. Even "healthy pizza" with a vegetable topping instead of processed meats is full of fat and sodium. For the record, I never eat cereal and we usually eat pizza twice a month.

(10,188 posts)It's a bread dough (flour, yeast, water) topped with tomato sauce (canned diced tomatoes cooked with onions, garlic, oregano from the garden, bay leaves from the neighbor's tree), shredded cheese (ok, that has a high fat content), and whatever toppings are at hand - last night's had red peppers and sweet onions. You can make it as greasy or non-greasy as you want. If you don't load it up with tons of cheese or high-fat meats it can be a pretty balanced meal.
Or you could just call it a tomato and cheese flatbread, which sounds a lot healthier and classier.

As a diabetic, I have to skip 90% of the offerings of most brunch potlucks.

(2,674 posts)Corn Flakes, Shredded Wheat, Wheat Chex - used to eat Raisin Bran, but now the raisins are sugared. I eat my cereal with milk, no sugar. I like malt-o-meal and cream of wheat plain, too. But Oatmeal is a different matter; got have a little butter and sugar.
