Hall table

I came up with a plan for a hall/sofa table.

Last week, my wife and I drove past a bed frame sitting by the curb. Not being one to pass up free stuff, I backed up and threw it in the back of the truck. I figured it was probably pine, but raw material is raw material.

Once I started tearing it apart and running it through the planer, turns out it was walnut. It has a nice natural oily sheen and a nutty smell. So I figured I'd turn it into the table I'd been planning.

I edge jointed and then glued up some strips to make the top..

Then routed a decorative edge on it once dry and sanded.

I used mortise and tenon for the top part of the frame, and biscuit joinery for the bottom.

It took stain nicely.

And after multiple coats of polyurethane, it came out okay.. It looks top-heavy in the pics, but that's just the perspective.

The pile of scrap at the bottom is what's left after tearing apart the rails and footboard. I still have the headboard to tear apart. I love using trash to make new things!

3. Beautiful piece, X_Digger. I like the contrast of the white legs to the dark wood. Nice

surprise that it was walnut, eh? I had a similar experience recently with an old coat wardrobe I found at a flea market for $35. I stripped off several coats of paint and discovered solid cedar underneath. Nice surprise.
