seed saving ??

will you get viable seeds from tomatoes or peppers which ripen off the vine?
is there any impact on pepper seeds if given the tomatoes rot treatment?

doing last round of seed saving w the mushy tomatoes and the first frost sweep of hot peppers.

what works against this in peppers is that don't seem to continue to ripen off the vine NRaleighLiberal Nov 2017 #3

seeds will be fine. Last year I had lots of breeding project tomatoes coming along in a second crop - some took over a month indoors to ripen - saved seed germinated fine this year.

Peppers won't really change color on sitting from my experience - they need to go to their final ripe color on the plant. Seeds from unripe peppers won't be any good - they won't germinate.

Pepper seeds just need to be removed and dried indoors (I use paper plates).

figure wtf. kitchen science.
interested in self seeding/volunteers in a big way. had a nice little yield of volunteer purple fingerlings, for the third year.
trying to figure out what crops to try to extend, and how.

plus planning for a big expansion into the little house i invested my divorce settlement into. big yards on both ends.
i think i may be close to 1/4 of an acre!

excited.

Not sure why - maybe something to do with the tomato structure vs the pepper...

I anticipate having little to no garden at all next year - cross country spring driving trip to visit each daughter!

It's fine - I - and my yard - could use a break!
