Pets
Related: About this forumPet's of abuse victims
If you've never met a woman in this position, it probably never occurred to you that a "pet" might be one of the things holding them with their abuser. ". . .Research shows that up to 48% of domestic abuse victims delay leaving an abusive relationship because they have no safe place for their animals. Countless victims stay with their abuser to protect their beloved animals. . . " Abusers often threaten to hurt or kill a pet. Even if not threatened, how does one just walk away from a "member of the family"?? They can't fend for themselves and their owner loves them - often needs them! Their pets have been loyal and many times provided the only "comfort", the abused might have in their life. You know you have to get OUT, but what about your dog or cat (or whatever?) You can't just leave them with- not with THAT! Who knows what the abuser will do??
Women/children shelters most often (to my knowledge) will NOT take pets. There is a program in Dane County Wisconsin that is working to help abused women in this situation. It's called the SAAV Program - http://www.saavprogram.org/ .
Sheltering Animals of Abuse Victims
Strengthen the ability of victims to leave abusive relationships by reducing barriers to safety.
Act as a change agent to create conditions in which victims and their animals are safe and free from abuse.
Advocate for the safety of animals at risk of abuse.
Validate the bond between domestic abuse victims, their children, and their animals.
This is wonderful program I just heard about it and wanted to share. If you're involved in pet rescue, maybe this would be of interest in your community. Here is some information on their website about getting more info:
"We are pleased to provide information to start-up nonprofits or other individuals interested in starting a sheltering program. Additionally, our volunteers are available to speak on the link between domestic abuse and animal cruelty and other similar topics. In addition to providing shelter services, we also hope to inspire others to make a difference in their own community and we are happy to serve as a resource to facilitate shelter programs in other communities. Please email us any time for assistance, use the contact form. Email: info@saavprogram.org "
This program can save lives. The lives of abused women and children (and yes, I know some men are often abused) and of dog/cats/gerbils - whatever "pet" they might have.
