Third update on my sick kitty

I took Riley home on Sunday. Turns out they weren't giving him that cancer pill after all but were just considering it. I have to give him prednisone twice a day and that's not easy. I decided to take the easy way out and crush the pill and put it in anti-hairball gel and spread it on his paws. So far he continues to act pretty much normally. Breathing is a little heavy though. He's alert, eating, hanging out by a dish of catnip mostly. The vet stressed that the normal behavior won't last so just taking it a day at a time. I tell him he's my Big Beautiful Boy.

Or is it just treating symptoms right now? If they are not expecting normal behavior to last, I assume they know something.

As to giving the prednisone, two options I can think of. I have always given my kitty the liquid form. It seems easier to me, at least with my cat. Or if your kitty is really into food, Pill Pockets might work. They worked for my other cats, but not my current one, so it is dependent on the individual.

Good luck. I am just glad that he is home where he has to be more comfortable.

his immune system is destroying his blood cells but they don't know why. His blood count has swerved from ten to 12 to 16 then a few days at 14, a plunge to 8 and then after they changed the steroid it zoomed back to 16, which is still anemic. When he was discharged his blood count was back down to 14. They've speculated it's cancer but I can't afford any more tests. I really couldn't afford what I already paid out. I do have a few of the chemo pills (they charged me $72 for four) but I'm waiting for an order from Drs. Foster & Smith for some kind of tasty pasty stuff that you put on pills that makes the cat thinks they're getting a treat. I also ordered the pill pockets. If that can't be used, and if I can't find a cheaper price for the chemo pill, I can't give him the chemo anyway. I was told that this is an "off label" use, i.e., administering the drug for its immune-suppressive properties, not because of cancer because they really don't have solid proof that that's the underlying cause of the anemia. I wonder if there isn't anything else to give him. I'll ask when I next speak with the vet on Friday. He does have to be happier here though. It's home.

through this. It's so difficult when they can't speak words, and when there's not a clear and certain diagnosis. Also when money is a factor in decisions on treatment. I went through something similar about 4 years ago. Anyway, I'm sending my best wishes to Riley, and hoping you get some positive or hopeful news today from the vet.
