Can any dog owners explain to me -

how a dog gets out of a harness by themselves? I don't have a dog, only cats - but there was a sad incident here in NYC involving a dog just adopted through Petfinder from another state. She was being walked on a leash/harness, on her second day with her new family when a wailing ambulance siren apparently spooked her and she got loose from the harness and ran away. This was in March and they're still searching for her. I'm not skeptical that she got loose from the harness, I just don't know how it could happen.

I check how PIA's harness fits daily. Too snug is uncomfortable. Too loose and the animal can pull free.

this reminds me of an extreme case - when I was waiting for a bus in NYC early (8:00-ish) on a Saturday when this man came along with two lively pups - the Prince ??? Spaniel (I never remember the name - the kind the Reagans had). Anyway, one dog got loose from the harness and began running around in the middle of the street. Luckily it was still early so traffic was light. He dropped the leash of the other dog (I stepped on it to keep the dog from escaping too) and ran out to get the other from the street. When he returned with the "escapee" he thanked me and said "these aren't even my dogs!" (Apparently was walking them for someone?) The point of this story is, he had had the harnesses wrapped around their necks like collars!

And then Mr ITW had problems putting the harness on her so she wears it 24/7. She doesn't mind. It was the only safe option for dog and owner.

Putting a figure 8 harness on a cat is fun. But you haven't lived until you try putting a harness and leash on a parrot. Gotta luv 'em!

It allows her to tuck them and slip backward right out of the harness. It doesn't matter how tight or the type of harness.

All my Akitas absolutely HATED their boots. And these were extra-special boots they supposedly couldn't get out of. Same boots that mushers use. But all of them were able to get off the first boot I put on even before I could get the next one on. I finally gave up on any of them wearing boots.

When dogs slip out of a harness or collar or some other restraint it's usually because it isn't adjusted properly or not hooked to the leash properly. Dog owners really need to figure out what physical restraint is needed with their individual dog and that it fits properly and is hooked to the leash properly so they can't get free from it.

In this particular situation I can't really tell if the dog actually got out of the harness or if the leash disengaged from the harness, but either way something wasn't properly adjusted or hooked together. If left to their own devices dogs can be darned clever at getting out of a harness or collar or muzzle or whatever even when it is adjusted or hooked up properly. Like those damn boots with my dogs that are supposed to be ultra-dog-can't-get-them-off boots they still were able to get off and so fast that I never even got a chance to get all of them on! I'm just baffled as to how they were able to do it, but do it they sure did. Clever stinkers.
