Had To Put Betty Bucelli Down This Morning

She was a big girl. Most of her life she was mid to high 20s pound kitty.
In the last couple months, she shed weight dramatically.
This morning she was leaking blood. My wife decided it was time before she really started to suffer.
This is her with Vincent keeping an eye on her.

She was close to 14.
Sad day around here. I don't think Vincent or Greta (her kitty sister) realize she's gone yet.

My oldest and middle children each had to say goodbye to their bearded collies (who were 14 an 15 years old)

Most of her life she was a bit skittish, so getting her into a carrier was a problem. Vet visits became near impossible.
Plus, as we suspected cancer, we knew we weren't spending a few thousand on treatments for a 13/14 year old cat.
So, we just rode out the last couple months.
We knew it was coming, but still tough.

Had to put my dog down a few years ago. I spent a couple thousand on tests and they couldn’t say for sure what was wrong but I could see in his X-ray that something had grown in his stomach that displaced his guts. When he stopped eating I knew it was bad. We actually had a vet come to the house to do it (that’s available now in some places) so at least he was comfortable with his family there.

And when Greta is gone (she's 19!), my wife wants a couple litter mate sisters.
If they outlive us, my sister will take them.
If the come in as babies, they'll bond with the dog like Greta & Betty did.
Will be soothing to have everyone hanging out.

She was a talker! She'd respond when spoken to for 15 minutes if I didn't get bored first.
"Hi, Buccelli," "Meow" "How are you today?" "Meow (3 or 4 times)" And so on.

...difficult and painful of choices, we have chosen to call it liberating the spirit.

Euthanize sounds to clinical and impersonal, put to sleep isn't accurate, and I personally just never cared for put down (this is not a criticism of those who are OK with this terminology).

Wishing you serenity.

It's such a difficult decision to let them go but she was fortunate that you did. 14 is a good life but it never seems long enough.

In the Netherlands they say "sterkte," which means courage. It seems like a good wish to make, so...sterkte.

we had that last summer with an older lab (from rescue, knew she was at least 12 based on when we got her but could've been a few years older) & same deal with probable cancer. She was a velcro dog so it was a hard loss, I was so used to her being wherever I was.

One night, that nasty thing either ruptured, pouring toxins into his system, or passed a clot to his heart.
Had to take him to emergency 24 hour vet to end it. He was barely aware of his surroundings.
We got Vincent a week or so later.

When an older cat starts losing weight you know it’s bad!

But for the next few days you swear your see her running by you! Or hearing her meow!

It's NEVER EVER easy, cuz you just love 'em so much...

And having walked in those shoes, I know how you feel. Even when it's for the best. And, like me, you may have mixed feelings about it (they're in a better place; they're not suffering or in pain anymore; they've lived a good long happy life...). And it kinda doesn't really help because nothing you say or think can make up for the fact that your furry little love is just GONE. I hope I'll see mine somewhere in the Hereafter. But I still feel it when I think about any one of 'em.
