Talks With Gun Control Advocates Seeking To Ban Gun Sales On Social Sites

Two of the country’s most influential gun control groups are in talks with Facebook’s legal team in an effort to see gun sales banned on the world’s largest social network and its sister site Instagram.

Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense In America has partnered with Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns to put pressure on Facebook to prohibit the private selling or trading of guns on its platforms — a practice that’s as widespread as it is unregulated.

“Facebook and Instagram are enabling people to sell weapons, often with no questions asked and no background checks required,” said Mayors Against Illegal Guns’ spokesperson Erika Soto Lamb.

Lamb cited a recent sting operation in Storm Lake, Iowa, where a convicted felon tried to exchange an assault rifle for a handgun via Facebook. In this case, the gun dealer was an undercover officer, and the 21-year-old felon was arrested and jailed.

MDA is a creation of MAIG to give them that MADD look. They merged only to avoid MDA from having to file an IRS 990 that would make public where their money comes from, which would also prove what everyone knows that Watts is simply an employee or her firm was hired to pretend MDA exists beyond her. That was also mentioned in the SAF email dump under the FOIL. BTW Shannan Watts isn't some "stay at home mom" who became an activist. She started her public relations firm, VoxPop Public Relations, in 2008. Prior to that she was Monsanto's Director of Global and Public Affairs who “led external initiatives designed to generate positive, proactive media coverage of the company’s agriculture biotechnology products.”

As you are fond of saying "I think that's pretty telling" that the major players include a often right wing paternalistic authoritarian who leads a collection of often corrupt mayors, a former Monsanto executive, a senator who loved the PATRIOT Act, thinks "only authorized journalists" should have first amendment protections and is the wife of a defense contractor/war profiteer.

This is dishonest if not lying. Some states would still require purchase permits or BGC if the sale is within their borders, intra state. Interstate sales must go through an FFL in the buyer's state and all federal and local laws apply, or face prosecution for violating the Gun Control Act.

Internet sales are not "unregulated"; different states allow different types of transactions, if they allow them at all.

What is against the law is against the law, and using FB or twitter or anything else to do anything illegal is still illegal.

Now, where it isn't illegal to publish a firearm for sale, then signs in a window, a classified add, or a posting on Facebook should not be a problem.

And, of course, background checks should be required of all such transactions, but that's not what this is about.

What a joke.

To do as they choose. Are many firearm sales posted their.

Why is it two "influential gun control groups" ? They formally merged, assuming they were ever separate...

It's fascist, it's unAmerican, it's pathetic, and it isn't being paid for by progressive groups or individuals.

What a joke, and what a bunch of suckers people are to buy into it.

Though I don't fully agree. MAIG ccan lobby just as the NRA or any other group can. Carriers can give No Guns= No $ cards to stores which prohibit carry. On yhat level it is the same. Facebook members can let their opinion be known. To think this will stop all internet sales is fantasy.

I disagree about progressive groups. Nothing about MAIG or any of its puppets is pprogressive ; though some progressives seem to like the idea of giving money to the billionaire creator of stop and frisk. Can't see the forest because of the trees I guess.

I completely agree with your summation.
