Senator to push S.C. gun-control bills

State Sen. Marlon Kimpson, D-Charleston, said the June 17 slayings at Emanuel AME Church and more recent incidents of gun violence show the need for tighter restrictions on gun ownership.

Kimpson said he hopes the state Senate will give his proposals serious consideration when it returns to work in January. “I don't think there is any dispute that there is a direct correlation between weak gun laws and violence,” Kimpson told The State on Monday. “It is within our power to do something about it.”

Kimpson’s proposals would:

▪ Close a three-day loophole that allows some S.C. gun purchasers to buy and take home a gun before a background check has been completed. That rule, and errors in the federal background-checking system, allowed alleged Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof to buy a gun.

▪ Require background checks to be conducted through the State Law Enforcement Division and the federal system before a gun sale can be completed

▪ Ban assault weapons, defined as semi-automatic firearms designed and configured for rapid fire

▪ Require reporting of lost or stolen guns

▪ Require state registration and permitting of all guns

Only under the gun control reality distortion field, are firearms which are strictly designed NOT to function fully automatic, defined as semi-automatic firearms designed and configured for rapid fire.

“I don't think there is any dispute that there is a direct correlation between weak gun laws and violence,”

Yes, just look at all the gun violence on that map in states like ND, SD, NE, MT, WY, UT, ID, NV, NM, CO, while states with strict gun laws such as CA and Ill and those states in the northeast have a violence free utopia.

So much for that talking point...

a ban on assault weapons defined as "semi-automatic firearms designed and configured for rapid fire." What is "rapid fire" for example? Semi-automatic firearms fire as fast as you can pull the trigger. Seems like his proposal simply bans all semi-automatic weapons.

5. Hmm. Our long-gone neighbor's "Sweet Sixteen" Browning would be banned...

That thing dated back to Bix Beiderbeck.

Come to think of it, my "Ought Three" .22 would have to be rounded up. Teddy R. was in office when that came off the line in New Haven. But he couldn't sing worth a crap.

4. It's gone about as far as it ever will - a press release

Kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel for gun control news these days. Google doesn't deliver like it used to I guess.

A state senator wants to sponsor a bill ... for a bunch of restrictions ... none of which would have had any impact on the church killer.

Doesn't even list any co-sponsors, so he hasn't really written his "proposed bill", and the press release just uses a bunch of stock Bloomberg check list items. Yeah, this will go far.

Almost as riveting gun control news as the Warwick city council keeping their city hall gun ban in place, because someone raised their voice in a meeting and a council member was offended and frightened.

6. I'm confused. Controllers often push for GC laws on the federal level on the assumption

that federal law will trump state laws. Yet, the SC senator is proposing a state law that would trump the 3-day sale rule from the Brady Act.

Does this mean Controllers support state laws that would obviate federal laws?

7. The gun control lobby has become a parody of itself.

A racist loser passed a background check thanks to an unfortunate FBI clerical error, and then murdered nine people with a low-capacity (and very ordinary) .45 caliber pistol.

The response from the gun control side is "Yay, maybe we can ban some more rifles this time! And magazines! Or at least we can tell people we will, even if we don't have the votes!"
