Gun control proponent: Women too weak to carry guns for self-defense

Leah Gunn Barrett, executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, stated on al-Jazeera's The Third Rail that

college campuses are some of the safest places in the nation
and when challenged by Florida state Representative Rehwinkel Vasilinda (D) that 20% of college women will experience rape or sexual assault, Ms. Barrett asserted
Women are not physically powerful like men are. A gun could easily be turned on the woman, and it is frequently.

http://america.aljazeera.com/watch/shows/third-rail/2015/8/would-guns-make-college-campuses-safer.html

Moments later when the host of the show asked if there is a right to self defense with a weapon she admitted that there is such a right in the home {only} because the Supreme Court has ruled so.

I guess women are simply SOL- even if you have a right to self defense, you are so weak it will be turned against you.

David Hemenway-

The gun is a great equalizer because it makes wimps as dangerous as people who really have skill and bravery and so I’d like to have this notion that anyone using a gun is a wuss. They aren’t anybody to be looked up to. They’re somebody to look down at because they couldn’t defend themselves or couldn’t protect others without using a gun.

It seems he thinks those wussy women should be looked down on for defending themselves with a gun. I wonder if he will think higher of them once the gun is taken away and they are victims...

Ms. Barrett needs to free her mind and then the rest of her should follow.

whenever Nugent farts out his mouth some misogynistic comment it is used to tar every gun owner.

Yet the response to Ms. Barrett's comments is more... muted

I'm a stay-at-home mom -- of sorts -- for my SIL. She is already becoming an amazing person in her own right. I want to see her grow up to be confident, unafraid and nobody's fool. I don't want her thinking she has to wait for someone else to save her, that she can do whatever she wants -- or has to.

http://nyagv.org/nyagv-calls-on-apple-ceo-to-disarmtheiphone/

NYAGV is calling on tech giant Apple to “disarm the iPhone” by removing the phone’s gun emoji.

The #DisarmTheiPhone social media campaign requests supporters to tweet Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, asking him to remove the gun emoji from all Apple products. The social media campaign was developed with BBH Barn, the internship program of Bartle Bogle Hegarty NY.

Leah Gunn Barrett, NYAGV Executive Director, said, “The gun emoji has taken root in our culture and our digital conversations. Let’s all call on Apple to get rid of the virtual gun and publicly join our call for universal background checks on all gun sales.” The campaign is supported by a website, a video, and an open letter to Apple.

Stupidity AND internalized sexism...Oy vey!

That last unsupported Blat is the kind of editorializing AP reporters squirt into gun-control rants.

She used a gun her father had given her to stop an attempted rape when she was in college. It's not "theory" to her, it's history and personal experience.

I'm pretty sure Rep. Vasilinda is a better judge of what works and doesn't in defending herself, than some NYC resident to whom it's all "philisophical", or an online gun control fan for that matter.

JURY RESULTS

A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Wed Aug 26, 2015, 01:53 PM, and voted 4-3 to HIDE IT.

Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Would have let stay as not a TOS, but SOP matter. But the OP Comment is inexcusable.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: ALL of today's gun threads in GD should have been moved to the gungeon. As that is NOT happening, I am not voting to hide on that basis; juries are not empowered with that authority anyway. It's a discussion that, I presume, is being temporarily allowed for the next few weeks. Voting to leave.
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: That last sentence just about made my head explode. Geezus.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I'm with the first two respondents. I don't understand the OP's point. But on a day like this I don't see it as hide-worthy. Lots of gun spec going on.
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given

Going out to work in the yard. Stay safe y'all.
