Student in Portage County arrested for holding assault rifle in Facebook profile picture

MANTUA, Ohio - A high school student in Portage County was arrested after deputies said he posted on Facebook a picture of himself holding an assault rifle.

The Portage County Sheriff’s Office arrested the 17-year-old Crestwood High School student Tuesday morning.

According to investigators, the school alerted authorities after becoming “aware and concerned” about Facebook postings by this student and that he had his profile picture set to an image of him holding an assault rifle.

The student is facing two counts of inducing panic, one count of aggravated menacing and one count of telecommunications harassment.

If you read the comments below the article, it seems he was arrested for some of the comments he made on the Facebook page--the picture was secondary to all that...

that completely misses the story. He was arrested for posting things on Facebook about shooting up his school, not for holding a gun in a photo

Completely lacking in detail.

If the kid made threats, then yes I am glad there was an intervention.

But the way this ass-hat of a journalist wrote the story you would think that the kid was arrested for the photo alone.

My 6 year old nephew could write a more thorough story than this shit.

Kids need to understand guns are not cool to most mature people. Good job police, scare the gun loving stuff out of him before something bad happens. Now, if he'd get a decent education on life and society.

He committed an actual crime. 'scare him', what kind of bullshit police state are you advocating for, anyway?

He broke a law, he's going to pay for it. Done and done.
