Wisconsin GOP lawmakers approve bill allowing 18-year-olds to carry guns at schools, churches

https://abc7chicago.com/wisconsin-gun-laws-concealed-carry-license-republican-party/11494693/

MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin's state Assembly has approved a package of Republican-authored bills that would dramatically expand gun rights in Wisconsin, even though Democratic Gov. Tony Evers almost certainly will veto all of them.

The proposals would allow people with concealed carry licenses to go armed on school grounds and in churches on private school grounds; lower the minimum age for obtaining a concealed carry license from 21 to 18; and allow anyone with a concealed carry license from any state to go armed in Wisconsin.

The Assembly passed all four proposals on voice votes during a floor session Thursday. The bills now go to the Senate.

what could possibly go wrong with high school kids carrying guns in school? rurallib Jan 2022 #1

So will churches be able to forbid guns on the basis of religious liberty? Raven123 Jan 2022 #2
Since they're private property, I would presume they could do so. Dial H For Hero Jan 2022 #4

Especially those putting themselves in political stance w/ issues. This is madness. There are enough problems w/ guns .. why stop at 18? It’s the Wild West in the 21st century logic with our elected..makes no sense.

a religious/faith test to strip an organization of their not for profit status.

Do you see a constitutional issue there?

There are political non-profits, and there are religious non-profits.

Political non-profits have to show their donors, religious ones do not.

If the Second Church of Jonah the Chum wants to talk about who to vote for and what bills should and shouldn't be passed, that's fine.... file as a political non-profit and report every person and every penny that donates to your church.

If the Second Church of Jonah the Chum doesn't want to report on every person and every penny that gets donated... shut up about politicians and legislation.

Johnson Amendment which states, in part, that an institution can be not-for-profit as long as &quot it) does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office".

Lifting the not-for-profit status just for being a religious organization (as gets suggested on DU on a pretty regular basis) would absolutely run afoul of the Constitution.

The Johnson Amendment, to the best of my knowledge, has only been tested once and only to the appellate level which leaves the door open for Supreme Court action.

The theocratic Republicans of course won't, and both the IRS and the Democrats are afraid to.

I think the the reason so many Democrats are anti-gun and cling to "culture-war" gun-control issues is out of frustration of the lack of action on so many other issues.

This is one of them.

that this is one of those things that neither side wants to enforce it and run the risk of having it challenged in front of the Supreme Court (same with the War Powers Resolution) and have it either affirmed or rejected as it takes a political point scoring device removed from their arsenal.

AB 495 would allow any concealed carrier to have the gun in his car while on school grounds. If the person leaves the car, the gun must stay in the car and hidden from view. The purpose of this bill is to allow parents to pick up their kids from school, while staying in the car.

Having the gun in the school building would still be illegal.
