Armed with rifles, a ‘mudroots’ Detroit group wards off crime

On the eve of Black History Month this year, a community group based in Detroit went viral after sharing clips on social media of its members, many dressed in all-black and armed with long rifles, assisting women around the city by pumping gas into their vehicles and loading groceries into their cars.

The group’s open display of guns — broadly legal in Michigan — was greeted by many people not for being threatening but for protecting Black women in dangerous neighborhoods at night.

The group, New Era Detroit, has been carrying out this kind of public safety work in the city’s most crime-ridden streets for almost a decade.

“We do this out of love,” Nilajah Alonzo, one of the leaders of New Era Detroit, told Yahoo News.

The group’s Instagram page includes videos of members escorting child care workers home late at night from a daycare only a block from where a murder had recently taken place. Another social media post shows members hosting a workshop with children on conflict resolution.

Members of the community protecting others in their community, IN CONJUNCTION with police. When seconds count, and the police are minutes away, WE are the first responders.

I can't believe this hasn't generated all kinds of outraged responses. It's got everything to piss people off.

Racism: I think the "mudroots" is somewhat sus. Though that may stem from the HP marathon I had to sit through the the Mrs. and hearing 'mudbloods' slung around as an insult. (Yes, I know they explain the term, just saying it sounds odd)

Toxic Masculinity: A group of males thinking they have to protect the women-folk. Like women need them to look after them?

Militia: Group of males that meet with weapons, go around on missions and maneuvers, "protecting the citizens"

Military weapons: The second picture, I see an AR pistol and an AR rifle. Certainly looks like "weapons of war", which have no place in civilian hands, or on the streets.

Playing Rambo: I see tactical vests, drop holsters, black gear, balaclavas and camouflage.

Yet nothing. No mocking peepee size, no questioning their intelligence, nothing about being incells, calling them 'gun humping cowards'. It's baffling.

Not that I would doubt the sincerity of my fellow posters, but it's getting harder and harder to make sense of things.
