Some Northern Virginia residents apparently object to the sound of freedom. People in Arlington are increasingly complaining about the noise from V-22 Ospreys flying over their neighborhoods, the Washington Post first reported on Thursday.
While these Virginians are fine with noise from other aircraft, the thunderous vibes from Ospreys make them feel as if they are on the receiving end of the helicopter attack scene in Apocalypse Now.
The aggrieved suburbanites have turned to their congressman to put an end to the horror, the horror. This is Northern Virginia; its not the Green Zone, Rep. Don Beyer told the Washington Post. The Democratic lawmaker has added an amendment to the House version of the fiscal 2017 National Defense Authorization Act that would require the Defense Department to study how much noise military helicopters make over the Washington, D.C., region and find ways to silence the effluvium of deafening decibels.

When Military Times reached out to defense officials on Friday, it quickly became clear that noise complaints do not go to a central location.

Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, has not received complaints about the two MV-22B Ospreys based there, said base spokesman Patrick Gordon, who added that most of the complaints they receive are about jet noise.
Marine Helicopter Squadron One flies MV-22B Ospreys out of Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico, Virginia. A spokesman for the base could not be reached for comment by deadline.

(13,616 posts)I laugh at this. I have heard Helicopters fly at 3am over my yard.
If you wanted that Military base with those Military jobs and those military spenders, you should expect this, unlike people in other parts of the world, who get tired of bases, and have no recourse at all.

Well, try telling that to the folks in the green Zone that have to put up with a lot more than noise.

(8,397 posts)When you buy a house, if there's going to be noise, it's disclosed. We bought a house near Chantilly, VA years ago and we were informed and had to sign a document stating we knew we were in the flight path of Dulles airport and that there would be noise. In fact, there was a plane that would take off at 10:30 p.m. Friday nights heading to London and I swear we could count the rivets, it was that close.
Evidently, the people complaining have no problem with general airplane noise. People are within their rights to complain if this is a new occurrence. Good for them.

(14,449 posts)The base was there first. They bought a home near a military base decades after the base was there. Now if they built a base after homes were built, I'd be on the side of the homeowner.
