African American
Related: About this forumThis is my first post here.
I came because of this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1187&pid=14610
My motivation is to understand the very high support for Hillary among African American Democrats and if possible to open a respectful dialogue about that.
By way of introduction, I am an old, fat, white hippie from the Midwest. I am disappointed in some of the Bernie supporters, in the sense that they were coming off arrogantly, etc., per the discussion in the link cited above.
So I have two questions:
1. Is this an appropriate venue for a discussion of Bernie Sanders?
2. If so, are there any Hillary supporters interested in having a discussion?

(31,849 posts)you will soon become aware that there is no need for a HRC versus Bernie discussion here, as there is not a single in this forum all in for HRC, or opposed to Bernie.
But that said, my fear (from white poster after white poster) is that your attempt to engage the Black folks here will unwittingly come off as, yet another attempt by a white person to tell Black folks what is, and is not in our interests ... I really doubt that you possess a single thought that the members here have not considered, and accepted or rejected.

(37,457 posts)1- this is the sub-forum for Bernie Sanders: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1280
You can also discuss him here if you wish.
2- I'm sure you can discuss Bernie with Hillary supporters both here, in General Discussion, and at the Hillary sub-forum, which is here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1107
Be aware when you post in a sub-forum, such as this one or Bernie or Hillary, that special rules apply. Read the Statement of Purpose before you post, just an fyi. Welcome to DU.

some WILL block you if you say the wrong thing in the so-called 'safe havens', I got blocked from the hillary forum for saying, go Bernie. AND be very concise in responses, people get very offended over very trivial disagreement(s) on a variety of subjects on DU in general, you'll see....This forum is pretty safe and open minded by the way, I luv it WELCOME...

(6,154 posts)that here in the African-American Forum on DU, a lot of people are not definite about Hillary.
Me personally, I'm going to sit back, watch everyone slug it out, then vote for the winner. I'm not campaigning for any of them. My focus is on Donna Edwards, a black Congresswoman running for Senate in Maryland. I'm campaigning for her.
However, if any candidate sticks his or her neck out, differentiates between economic and racial injustice, and talks about ways to address racial injustice, I'll be in his or her camp, and might campaign.

I lived in Maryland for a short while and really liked Donna Edwards. Good luck with that campaign!

(20,450 posts)But in all honesty, I will never be convinced that HRC gives a shit about black folk. Everyone here on this forum knows why; no need to continue to rehash the arguments over and over again.
I like Bernie, but I'd like to see him discuss race issues, specifically, and address these issues in front of ALL audiences--even when it's inconvenient or uncomfortable.
Every single one of the candidates are flawed and I think that's a good thing. But one thing I know for sure is that I can never--and WILL NEVER--support HRC. Period.

That's going to be my approach too.

(18,124 posts)Bernie to specifically address the murders of unarmed POC by the badge and gun 'club'(s) that is reaching epidemic proportions. I like him above the rest so far, but I really am going to have to see if he updates his 60's commitment to racial justice. Hillary? I don't expect anything from. Period. As NextGen mentioned somewhere else, she will pat us or rub us (my addition to quote)on our head and say, go vote for me and quit whining....

(24,544 posts)I keep seeing Sanders supporters who keep trying to discuss race in forums where hardly any of the remaining people of color read let alone participate in. So I'm glad that someone is actually in this forum trying to have the conversation instead of shouting at us from corners of this web site that we don't read and accusing us of being "infiltrators" and our concerns "fake."
Welcome, Admiral! I'm happy to have the discussion even though I'm undecided at the moment and pretty pleased with all of the candidates right now.

(135,425 posts)How did you come up with that user name?
Admiral Loinpresser
(3,859 posts)1) The Tail Hook Navy party/groping women scandal had broken out in about 2002; and
2) The infamous Admiral Poindexter from Iran contra had been resurrected by BushCo to head a proposed TIA program, whereby Americans would be encouraged to spy against each other, part of the post 9-11 hysteria.
So I guess I put #1 and #2 above together and came up with my handle.
