West endorsing Sanders will get Sanders black voters.

And if anything, this will have the completely ADVERSE affect of whatever Sanders is trying to go for. It will prove beyond all shadow of all doubt that the man is 100% CLUELESS with no chance of hope or salvation when it comes to race matters. And for a man who's campaign is right now constantly being dogged by allegations he doesn't know or care about the black experience, this is the LAST THING HE SHOULD DO.

Please GOD don't let him do this.

I actually like Sanders and can see myself voting for him if he's still around for the CA primary--excepting Webb, I like all of them, really-- but holy god it's a terrible tactic that's sure to alienate people.

What Zizek is describing here is the way "racist" jokes--I'd say that, from an American perspective, he's really talking about nationalist jokes--form a kind of social cohesion across ethnic or national boundaries. They are, for him, examples of the ways ideology and power are laid bare: becaue they cut so close to the bone of the unspeakable about (ethnic or national) identity, they allow progress to happen by creating bonds across difference. (He tells some similar stories in, I think, his book The Plague of Fantasies, but I haven't read it recently so I can't remember it well enough to give a more thorough account of it.)

This is a riff, really, on Freud's ideas from Jokes and Their Relati0n to the Unconscious--Zizek's roots are in Lacanian psychoanalysis; Lacan's psychoanalytic theory was founded on a return to Freud, so his disciples, like Lacan himself, use Freudian tropes as a springboard. And what Freud said about humor is that it permits people to say things that are repressed parts of the social unconscious, or what Zizek here calls "ideology."

The best examples I can think of here are people like Dave Chappelle and Sarah Silverman, whose jokes express cultural truths but, in expressing them, mock them by laying bare the ideology underlying them.
