The flag or guns? (also posted on GD)

Marc Thompson visited Michaelangelo Senorelli yesterday on Sirius radio and they discussed the unprecedented speed that repugs have gotten on board with dumping their "beloved" confederate battle flag.

It is quite surprising that they've yielded so quickly on this. There seems to be more behind it, noticeably there has been no talk AT ALL about gun control even after the horrible murder of the nine church goers last week.

The issue of gun control is not even being discussed. It's all about the "great victory" being won in getting rid of that flag.

Nikki Haley is being praised for her courageous stand in asking the state legislature to act on taking down the flag. Funny though, she only acted after the victims' relatives showed up at a bond hearing to forgive the killer less than 48 hours after the shooting, which is more than strange IMO.

Who does that so swiftly while still reeling from having loved ones snatched from you by hatred and violence. There is speculation that there was some manipulation, and then advantage quickly taken by Haley, with cover now from the killer being forgiven, to move on the removal of the flag and thus take gun control as an even more pressing issue due to the horrific shooting, off the table.

A week later there is no denying that. Absolutely no one is talking about the necessity of tightening
gun control.

Now all over the South that flag is coming down with startling alacrity. I want it gone as much as the next person but it's been TOO EASY. It's been a brilliant distraction.

They chose to ditch the flag instead of their precious guns.

responded by the call for expansion of gun rights in his state.

You are right - it was a distraction - wasn't it?

It's also taken the focus off of the hate crime itself . ..

And still waiting to hear about that church in North Carolina burned down in the wee small hours of the morning on Wednesday.
