(23,340 posts)My undergraduate degree is in filmmaking. I thought the way McQueen told the story was original and surprising.
The history was excellent but I knew most of it. Still a powerful film.

(32,046 posts)Horror flick. Understand I love American Horror Story - over the top, campy, silly special effects -
But I still have to watch it sitting behind The Gio.
I've yet to see 12 years fade in to fade out and I really have no desire to see it.

(32,046 posts)Look up the movie Belle. Overshadowed that year by 12 years - but one of those little stories that get lost in the bigger slave trade issues.

(31,849 posts)I liked it ... It pissed me off; but, I liked it.
Belle's treatment kind of put to rest the economic justice will bring social justice argument ... Even though she could buy and sell her cousin (and her entire family) and there was the suggestion that Belle was brighter and more accomplished than her cousin, Belle still couldn't eat with the family when company came.
(Yeah ... I know ... That was England; America is different!)

(32,046 posts)My husband picked up on the 'she's got more money than god' point - and could buy and sell the rest of them - but he also pointed out -
Was any place in the world safe for Belle at that time? If she had picked up and left? Where would she have gone? Where COULD she have gone?
