Belmont over before it began. Celtics choke away games 6 AND 7, setting up a nightmarish LeBonds-Mootown matchup. The Supreme Court renders a 5-4 decision in the case of Pacquiao v. Bradley. And now this. The Stanley Cup not only bakes in 90-degree temperatures far below the 37th parallel AGAIN, it does so with a bunch of bums who literally sleazed into the playoffs on the last day of the season.
Just kill me now.

(17,091 posts)Pole to Pole at Pocono, and the Sox got swept by the freaking Expos, of all people, at home...
The Freaking "Expos" are pretty good. Harper, Strasburg and Gio are great to watch. Even your Sox fans know that after they clapped for Harper on Friday night..

(1,614 posts)that's for sure.
Still....The Celtics made a good run at the Heat. Union Rags ran a great race in the Belmont. The Stanley Cup was a shocker.
Controversy is good for Sports (Group).
Peace.

(1,614 posts)I thought Dullahan would fuck it up. But, that's horse racing. Alydar's curse on the Triple Crown.
Hockey was not that interesting to me this year. Not that I follow it much. I'm originally from the Detroit area so I kinda keep track of the Wings.

(955 posts)They didn't sleaze into the playoffs. Just because it was competitive, doesn't mean they didn't deserve to be in the playoffs. They could have been ranked anywhere between 3rd and 8th. Anyone paying attention to the western conference would have known that the Kings were playing the best hockey during the last few months of the season. I can understand why some people would just look at the stats and think that the Kings barely made it, given how much east coast bias is present in NHL coverage. The Kings deserved the Cup.

(14,176 posts)It will see fewer 90 degree days here than it would in Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, or New York.

(22,143 posts)They played better than everyone else. And the parity in the league is such that less than 20 points separated #1 and #16.
Give some credit where credit is due.
Unless you happen to be a Ducks fan. I would get that.

(78,249 posts)Remember? The team that beat them twice to end the season?
Strangely, my favorite Ducks fan is beside herself. With joy. That's SoCal for you.

(22,143 posts)I thought the Ducks were the main rivals but I do remember the antics between the Kings and Sharks at the end of the season. Some fun stuff there.

(41,692 posts)Ahhh the good old days when you and your alter-ego would play the race card defending your her0, Mr. Barry Bonds.
Dude--- I got tons of this shit---you really want to keep playing?

(9,709 posts)first time that I can remember. An 8th seed versus a 5th seed. It would be as if the NBA Finals consisted of Atlanta against Utah. Something Stern would never allow. Perhaps Bettman ought to think about fixing games too..

(6,279 posts)It was ever thus. Back in the days of a 6-team league 4 teams made the playoffs. Now 16 of 30 teams make the playoffs, so it's actually a higher bar today in a certain sense than in the "Original Six" period.
This is why I pay little attention to the regular season - everyone knows it's all about the best-of-sevens at the end, and except for the teams scrapping for the last few spots the season is mainly about winning home ice. Which mattered not at all the way the Kings owned the road.
This is why they play the games. Every tournament in any sport is about who plays the best during the tournament. Think about March Madness... only the most ill-tempered of curmudgeons and fans of the losing teams bemoan colossal upsets like NC State in '83 (6 seed) or Villanova in '85 (8 seed). The Kings flat-out played the best hockey of the playoff qualifiers, and that is - and always has been - what it takes to become Stanley Cup Champions.
