INDIANAPOLIS -- The Browns were close to a trade that would have sent 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh from San Francisco to Cleveland, Pro Football talk reported Friday, citing multiple league sources.
According to the website, a deal was in place that would have sent multiple draft picks to the 49ers for Harbaugh, but the coach ultimately decided not to leave San Francisco. Harbaugh has coached the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game three years in a row, and to the Super Bowl once.
"The team conducted an extensive coaching search, and explored several options," the Browns said in a statement Friday. "That search produced an outstanding head coach in Mike Pettine, and we're excited about his future with the club."

A 49ers source told NFL Network that the report was "ridiculous" and "completely false."

(31,230 posts)and some how the story grew into something bigger. But to hear that "Harbaugh nixed the deal" as reported in the Chronicle today (Saturday), I begin believing the story's validity.
If it were a first round choice (Browns have two first round picks) and a second or a few later in the later rounds, it could work to benefit the 49ers long-term.

(64,934 posts)will be back into limbo again. I don't consider these Browns to be of any relationship to the former Browns. Two completely separate team.
I'm sorry but the real Cleveland Browns are now the Baltimore Ravens and have won two Super Bowls. The current Cleveland Browns are just another expansion team experiencing the same pitfalls as the Tampa Bay "Y"uccaneers did in their first 20-30 years of existence.
