Beautiful moment in Dodger Stadium last night

With the Giants clinging to a 2-l lead over the Dodgers in the top of the fifth, S.F. starter Madison Bumgarner comes to bat with no outs and a runner on first. Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is on the mound. Both pitchers are dialed-in and having wonderful outings.

The situation calls for a sac bunt to put baserunner Joaquin Arias in scoring position. Only Bumgarner happens to be one of the best hitting pitchers in the N.L. and could just as easily jack one into the seats. So Kershaw has to approach Bumgarner with as much caution as he would any position player. Batter, pitcher, teammates, managers and fans know just about any outcome is possible.

First pitch, Bumgarner shows bunt but the fastball misses. Ball one. Second pitch, Bumgarner swings for the fences but misses another fastball. Third pitch, Bumgarner fouls a bunt attempt -- third fastball. Fourth pitch is a curveball in the dirt. 2-2 count. On the fifth pitch Kershaw gets Bumgarner to swing and miss at a final fastball. Kershaw wins the battle.

It was a classic baseball moment between two superstars and part of a tradition over one hundred years old. And one that could never happen in the American League. I don't care what anyone says. DH baseball just isn't the same. If you love the game you have to love the drama of this fifth inning at-bat. If you love the game you have to loathe the DH.

Bumgarner is a career .160 hitter with a .247 Slugging percentage and 6 home runs in 300 ABs. Yes, he's a very good hitting PITCHER. To say this another way, he's not nearly as good a hitter as the worst hitting position player in all of MLB, and likely, all of AAA.

It wasn't a "classic baseball moment". It was a great pitcher pitching to an awful hitter (who also happens to be a great pitcher). It's something you can see in the American league as well (great pitcher/lousy hitter), it's just that the hitter is considerably better and the outcome is less certain. I don't have an issue if the pitchers want to bat, but it's more for the enormous "underdog factor" than anything else.

The best way to make the case that we should get rid of the DH is to start finding pitchers that can hit, not referring to people as the "best hitting pitcher" as if it means anything more than being the "tallest kid in 2nd grade"

I always thought the DP was the lazy way out.

I lived in the Bay Area and watched many an A's game and Giants game in person.

I played baseball as a young man--some college ball as well---so I know the sport very well.

The coaching strategies for the NL are a blast to watch if you know how to watch.

Substitution in key parts of the game---pulling pitchers in key parts of the game, etc.....

Sure I get it---what's the fun in watching a pitcher who couldn't hit a beach ball bat in the early innings---nope---it's the later innings that have my interest.

The strategy of baseball is what makes baseball a great game in mho.
