John Daly allowed to use cart at PGA Championship

For the first time since 2012, a competitor in a major will use a cart, after John Daly was granted a medical exemption for the PGA Championship.

Daly, 53, suffers from osteoarthritis in his right knee. The PGA Championship will be contested at New York’s Bethpage Black course, known for its length and uneven terrain.

"I hope I don’t get a lot of grief from the fans,” Daly told the Associated Press. “My knee is screwed. I had the meniscus cut out. I have osteoarthritis so bad … I can walk up a hill, I just can’t walk down one.”

Daly applied to the PGA of America for a cart under the Americans With Disabilities Act. In a statement provided to The Washington Post, the organization said his request was “reviewed and approved” by its medical staff after he “provided the requisite information.”

Mmmm ... IMO it still constitutes an unfair advantage (unless he misses the cut altogether).

What does the crowd here think?

1. if getting out of the "leisurely walk" part of the game is a materially unfair advantage,

then golf is a very silly "sport".

imho, if his knee is really messed up, then it's adversely affecting his game more than a cart can help.

3. I'd be really surprised if he makes the cut

It's been since 2017, I believe, since he's made a cut and that broke a 2 2/2 year slump.

If his knee is really that bad, why is he still playing? I suppose some people are entertained by Daly's antics but that wore off for me a long time ago. The caricature that he has become is just repulsive to me because he "acts" like all the other obnoxious, blowhard, hard drinking/smoking assholes who show up at the driving range and brag about how far they can hit the ball off a beer can.

It was a while back, but someone sued the Tour over this issue and the Tour lost. They basically had to give him the exemption if he could document the need.

6. Not the same situation as Casey Martin

Daly's issue is the result of either old age, injury from playing the game, reckless lifestyle, or a combination of all three.

Casey Martin was born with Klippel–Trénaunay syndrome -- a circulatory disability in his right leg.

9. The cart won't make a difference. His game isn't messed up

Because he’s tired or sore.

He wouldn’t have normally qualified but the PGA championship has a lifetime exemption for past winners, which he did almost 30 years ago.

Is the use of a cart a bigger advantage than whatever high-end therapies that Tiger Woods underwent to rejuvenate his body? These guys have access to all kinds of cutting-edge health care technologies that the average Joe golfer could never afford. There are already tiers that separate the elite in every sport from the common person.

12. Suppose the cart helps him make the cut. That means another player doesn't ...

someone with a career and endorsements on the line ... an up-and-comer who might really need the money and experience.

Daly has had his turn.

so I don't care if he is denied the cart, to be honest.
