two African-Americans (Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton) played in the first ATP final in the Open Era.

“He won three singles Grand Slam titles: the US Open in 1968, the Australian Open in 1970 and Wimbledon in 1975. He won two Grand Slam doubles titles: the French Open in 1971 and the Australian Open in 1977. Arthur Ashe was ranked no 1.”

Seem to be good hearted men off the court as well. May we see many more contests between them and many other finals involving African American women and men in the years to come.

Althea Gibson, Arthur Ashe, and Serena and Venus Williams were the pioneers.
