Related: About this forumAngels: did you hear about that call
against Nolan Schanuel of the Angels?
In short: a play in which he reached first when the first baseman dropped the throw was ruled a hit, extending the rookie's on-base streak to 30.
Then the review: not a hit. An error.
Why it matters: " . . . all the positivity surrounding Schanuel and his attempt to break the all-time on-base record to start a career was derailed because of MLB's foolish decision . . . ."
MLB is getting a lot of crap already this season, and from what I hear, it's well-deserved.

(52,506 posts)The toss from 1b to p was weak and behind, but I think catchable, so i'd give the error to the pitcher. But yes, either way, he got to first on an error.
An unfortunate aspect is that if the first baseman hadn't made that great catch and the ball went past him into the outfield, it wouldn't have been an error. At least I think so. Not sure how they decide if it's an error is a fielder doesn't pull off a difficult catch or stop.

(53,978 posts)then it would've been a hit. Unfortunately, the ball got there, and was dropped, before he got there.

(1,347 posts)I was too wrapped up in feeling bad for the kid that I didn't even think to watch the clip.
Clearly an error.
I'm only slightly embarrassed, though.
The Angels broadcasters blew it. I don't know what their reasoning was - maybe sentimentality for the kid.
