The time an umpire ejected 14 players from 1 team

In a baseball game, even a single ejection can turn into a big event. They lead to arguments. Faces get red, fingers get pointed and, sometimes, even bases get stolen.

So can you imagine the scene if 10 players were to get tossed? What if an entire dugout got sent off? That's exactly what happened on July 19, 1946, when umpire Red Jones ran 14 members of the White Sox in a game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

It started innocuously enough. In the third inning, White Sox starter Joe Haynes threw a pitch at Red Sox star Ted Williams that forced the Splendid Splinter to hit the deck. In response, Jones gave Haynes a warning.

Instead of putting an end to rising tensions between the teams, what ensued was an all-out war between dugout and umpire.

The Red Sox famously trashed for trading away Babe Ruth, got Williams in a trade.

So named by the young son of a photographer who covered the Red Sox. The boy didn’t know Ted’s last name so when asked by his dad about who he wanted to see at the game, he replied “I want to see Teddy.” His dad said “Teddy Who?” The son replied, “Teddy Ballgame.”

The photographer, Fred Kaplan, told Ted about it and Williams loved the story so much that Teddy Ballgame became his preferred nickname.

I had never heard of that when I came from Germany, the first job as a teenager I got was working for the AAA of the Chicago Cubs. I collected baseball cards and worked at seating scouts, many of them retired ball players. One scout gave me very old cards and through my college years when I needed extra money, I sold them, I still have a few left, specially of the players I met personally. It was really fun to be at the AAA level because many of those players went on to national starfdom!
