Related: About this forumA Flamboyance of Flamingos
The collective noun to describe a gathering of flamingos is flamboyance, an appropriate term for these colorfully-feathered creatures. They flock together by the thousands on salt flats, lagoons, lakes, and swamps around the world, where they can filter-feed for shrimp, algae, and insects. Gathered below, a few flamingo photos, showing them flap, feed, fly, and flock together.

(31,409 posts)I was looking forward to visiting the flamingo park on Bonaire with my son and his partner when I was there for my birthday this year in March. Instead, they literally texted me from the airport at 4 am they weren't coming on March 7th due to worries about the coronavirus and I ended up cutting my trip short by a week and flying home on March 9th.
Now I don't know when, if ever, I'll get to return to Bonaire for another birthday trip to see the flamingos there.

(1,946 posts)My favorite species of bird. They have so many distinct behaviors, most of which are for group cohesion. If you are just sitting or standing and watching them for any length of time a lot of what they do seems just random postures or movements, but they are really signaling to their flock mates. eg: I'm a dominant bird, let's all move over this way, I'm a sexy guy--pick me! (This kind of thing is actually true for most bird species, but when you see it in a group of many, it's fun and impressive)
Thanks for posting the link, great photos.
