Supreme Court of Canada rules Quebec students must take Ethics-Religion course.

<snip>When the program became mandatory in Quebec schools in May 2008, the appellants, who cannot be named under a court-ordered publication ban, had one child in elementary school and another in secondary school.
The parents wrote to the two schools to request that their children be exempt from the courses.
They claimed their children would suffer serious harm from contact with a series of beliefs that were mostly incompatible with those of the family.

<snip>When Quebec first brought in the ethics and religion course, some Catholic parents fought back, saying it interfered with their ability to pass their faith on to their children. They also argued that it infringed on their freedom of conscience and religion under the Charter of rights and Freedoms.

I was nervous about it when my kids started taking the course, but I paid attention to their projects and other things and quickly realized it wasn't about promoting Jesus and the rest.
As an atheist I figured other atheists would be all up in arms about their kids learning about religion. Turns out it wasn't at all, the Catholics, for the most part, were the ones all freaked out about it and tried to have their children exempt.

It sounds like that. I had to take it in Catholic School. Who found this religion and that, when, what are the tenets of their relgiion. It is almost like a history course. Nothing wrong with that. Might be a good thing to know what other religions are all about. It did also go into atheism. My appointed Senior paper was to argue on BEHALF of atheism. Got an A on that. Catholic School. Ah, I was taught well. Maybe TOO WELL for them, if you know what I am saying.

The actual title of the class is Ethics and Religious Culture. They go into religions easily, like learning about anything else I suppose. I have one in grade 11 and one in grade 6. The class isn't all about religions, but they do have projects from time to time. My son in grade 6 did one on Islam recently.. Basically what the symbols mean and their holidays and stuff. It gets more into it as they progress. The younger ones will learn more in the end than the ones that only had a couple years to complete the classes.
