Coelho asked whether he would like to say confession first, and Plishka said he began to talk about his history, including his lifelong struggle with his sexuality. Plishka didnt come out as gay until he was in his 50s.
Then we started talking about the pope, and I said I was so excited about him, because of what he said about gays. I said, Does that bother you, that Im gay? And he said no, Plishka said.
The conversation was interrupted by someone coming into the room, which he shared with another patient, Plishka recalled. After that, Coelho would not continue with the specific prayers and acts of Communion and anointing, Plishka said. He said, I will pray with you, but thats all hed do. That was it.

about loving and tolerance and not being obsessed with sexual matters.
Another noise blast too, I see.

(13,029 posts)6. You need to get out more
and stop presuming, as others do, that your limited personal experience, or lack thereof, is evidence for anything. And also that you know anything about what Jesus, if he existed at all, was really like.

(49,533 posts)7. In your opinion.
It is still an official Catholic teaching that homosexuality is "intrinsically disordered."
http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_19861001_homosexual-persons_en.html
In the discussion which followed the publication of the Declaration, however, an overly benign interpretation was given to the homosexual condition itself, some going so far as to call it neutral, or even good. Although the particular inclination of the homosexual person is not a sin, it is a more or less strong tendency ordered toward an intrinsic moral evil; and thus the inclination itself must be seen as an objective disorder.
Therefore special concern and pastoral attention should be directed toward those who have this condition, lest they be led to believe that the living out of this orientation in homosexual activity is a morally acceptable option. It is not.

(49,533 posts)9. That may very well be true.
But that doesn't mean it can't (or doesn't) happen.

(22,340 posts)11. Well, acting on your homosexuality is a mortal sin
And since I'm on a roll of teaching people what the actual Canon of the RCC is, here's this tidbit:
Canon 1007
The anointing of the sick is not to be conferred upon those who obstinately persist in manifest serious sin.
The anointing of the sick is not to be conferred upon those who obstinately persist in manifest serious sin.
So, it is clear Canon that this guy should not have received this sacrament. Sorry that that doesn't sit with what one may think the Church should be about, but it fits with the actual dogma of the church.

(49,533 posts)12. So yeah, it appears according to official church teachings...
this priest was 100% correct to deny the man last rites. Sad.
