FLORIDA: Church Bans Children to Keep Pedophile Pastor
A church in Jacksonville, Florida is coming under fire for its controversial decision to ban children from its church services.
According to a local Jacksonville news affiliate, Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church has banned children from attending Sunday services because their new pastor, Darrell Gilyard, is a registered sex offender and cannot have contact with children.
In 2009 Gilyard plead guilty to lewd conduct and lewd molestation of two underage girls. While he was the pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church Gilyard molested a 15-year-old girl and sent a lewd text message to another. Under the conditions of his plea agreement, Gilyard cannot have unsupervised contact with children under 18 years old, and his new church has taken extraordinary steps to help Gilyard stick to the terms of his deal.
Despite the seriousness of his offense, Gilyards return to the pulpit was swift. After being released from jail on December 28, he resumed preaching in January, and told reporters he hopes he can move past this incident and continue with his work.

(19,705 posts)Thousands of clergy have been known to the church to be pedophiles, yet they were just reassigned to continue their church duties.
Is this case any different?

(3,521 posts)I feel no different about it at all! As far as the Catholic church is concerned I don't understand how they got away with it so long. If I had come home and told my parents I had been molested by a clergyman I think my father would literally have beaten him to death. I would do the same with respect to my own kids. But the folks in this story are actually choosing a pedophile as their pastor. The mind wobbles!

(1,034 posts)some real shuck and jive lines in his preacher quiver.
Most churches would look away when he came around. What is wrong with these people.

(19,705 posts)They are following their deeply held religious beliefs, nothing more. Why does doing that make them wrong?

(1,751 posts)Following your beliefs too, I see.

(19,705 posts)I answered.
Do you disagree that these people (the one attending the church in the article) have something "wrong" with them? I said that no, they do not have anything wrong with them, as they are just following their deeply held religious beliefs. Do you disagree?
And why didn't you asked the person I responded to why he chose to ask "what is wrong with these people" or another poster above who asked that in the subject line?

Seems like you were just trying to take a shot at me...and it failed miserably.

(2,261 posts)So naturally, the children are not important.
Actually, any children of members of this church have a better chance of growing up into atheists, now.
