(30,803 posts)was used as code for escaping slaves. When it was sung, the fugitive slaves knew that they had to get into the water to throw off the scent of the dogs tracking them. Some slave owners forbade the singing of the song.
Quilts were often hung out that contained code about slave movements. Since slaves could not read, the quilt patterns sent messages. I have a book about those quilts.
